Is Your Inner Voice Not Being Nice?

Your inner voice is not you, and you are not your inner voice. You are the being that observes the inner voice.

At times the inner voice is your friend, and other times it’s your worst enemy. Either way, it’s utterly detached from reality.

When I saw the massive crash on Stage 1 of The Tour de France last year, I jumped out of my seat. Holy wow, what a disaster. It makes my heart skip a beat any time I see a crash, but this one was spectacular, and also completely avoidable.

An excited, possibly clueless, fan with a cheesy grin was holding up a homemade sign for the tv cameras. With her back to the oncoming riders, her sign intruded into the road, and carnage was unavoidable. One rider clipped it and went down. When he went down, it took out dozens of other riders. Like scattering dominoes, the pro-athletes careened into the grass, bowled down spectators, and rode over each other.

For a few days after that hellish scene, I joked with my husband and kids, “Hey, next time you feel like you’re having a bad day, just remind yourself you didn’t take down The Tour de France on Day 1.”

Back to the inner voice. Have you noticed it can swing like a pendulum? Sometimes it’s quite content, and maybe it’s even supportive. Other times it’s like it was stung by a swarm of wasps, and it has nothing nice to say.

Who knows why or when the inner voice is going to act up and be unkind, but the next time yours starts misbehaving, put a smile on your face, hold your ground, and tell it, “Hey, at least I didn’t take down The Tour de France on Day 1.”

…put a smile on your face, hold your ground, and tell it, “Hey, at least I didn’t take down The Tour de France on Day 1.”

Enjoy your day!
